Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are directional illumination, meaning that most of light is aimed in one direction. This is especially beneficial when used in overhead lighting because the desired surface receives more balanced illumination than with an incandescent bulb.
When you compare the two photographs above, it’s clear that the LEDs (shown left) illuminate a larger surface area directly below the lights verses the incandescent bulbs (shown right). Measured with a digital illuminance meter, the LEDs emit about 20% more footcandles than the incandescent; this greatly increases visibility over a much larger area. LED festival lights consume nearly 90% less energy than traditional bulbs. Coupled with their virtually indestructible plastic construction and rating of 50,000 hours life, these lights will save you money in both maintenance and energy consumption while giving you better illumination where you need it.
